Modeling, Prediction, and Control


Computational models that are most useful to engineers reflect the essential dynamics and physical behavior of systems and processes—often involving a complex set of interactions between components and sub-processes—in streamlined forms that facilitate comprehensive analyses over a wide range of operating conditions and candidate designs.


Computational efficiency and accuracy are always competing interests in the modeling process.  Finite Element Method (FEM) models of structures and solid mechanics and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of problems involving fluid flows are capable of accurately representing complex dynamical responses, but model sizes and computational simulation times can be extreme—with degrees of freedom on the order of tens of millions.  These sizes limit the number of candidate designs and the operational range an engineer can explore.

Modeling Missile Defense Systems

The challenge is to devise models that are orders of magnitude smaller without compromising accuracy in predicting the critical behavior of the physical system.  Models can be deterministic or statistical (or both).  High-dimensional CFD and FEM models based on equations that govern the physical processes are deterministic.  Reduced-order, deterministic representations of the same governing equations address the issue of computational expense.  Statistical methods can also address the issue of expense by constructing models from a limited set of experimental or operational data that predict behavior over a much larger range of the design and operational space covered during testing.  The Clear Science Corp. product line offers both statistical and deterministic models—and models that synthesize the two approaches.


Our models have been used to predict the behavior of a diverse set of physical systems.  In almost every engineering discipline involving a wide array of products, the design process relies on a mixture of laboratory testing, computational modeling, and final performance evaluations—drawing from the strength and offsetting the weakness of each.
